Sports news in brief – March 2

In salient local sports news today, four Vietnamese track-and-field athletes are to take part in the Asian Grand Prix next May, and the International Women’s Bicycling Tournament is to be launched next week.
Local sprinters to run at Asian Grand Prix

Southeast Asian sprint champions Vu Thi Huong and Truong Thanh Hang will represent Vietnam at the 2012 Asian Grand Prix Championship to take place in Thailand next May. According to the organizing board, the women’s 100m and 800m events have been listed in the championship, instead of the 200m and 1,500m events as earlier announced.

This has enabled Huong to attend the women’s 100m event, and Hang, the 800m, giving them each a chance to achieve the Standard B to grab a ticket to the 2012 London Olympics this summer. Prior to attending the Grand Prix, Huong will have two to three weeks of training overseas, while Hang will undergo training in China’s Kunming city. Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc and Nguyen Thanh Ngung will be leaving for Japan to attend the Asian Walking Grand Prix, from March 8 – 12, competing in the women’s 20km walking event.

The Olympic Standard B for walking is 01:38:30, a time which Duong Duc Thuy, head of the athletes department, said Thanh Phuc is likely to pass to be present in London this summer.

2nd Biwase Cup to start next week

The Binh Duong International Women’s Cycling Open Tournament 2012, or Biwase Cup 2012, will kick off next Thursday in the southern city of Binh Duong to mark the International Women’s Day. The competition has attracted the 11 strongest domestic teams from across the country, and three foreign squads from Thailand, Korea, and Malaysia.

On opening the tourney, racers will race around the Binh Duong New City, before competing in six rounds over a total distance of 685 kilometers through Binh Duong, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh and Binh Phuoc.

Total cash prizes are worth VND270 million, up VND70 million compared with the inaugural tourney last year.
